Then the evening brought us a fire..behind that very same farm spot.
Wow. Waking up at 11:45 to sirens on my quiet street brought a lot of strange feelings. I looked out my window and saw a police car parked by a neighbors. I wondered if someone was hurt. I tried to go back to sleep. Then I heard a bunch of people talking..looked outside and saw (what looked like) Halloween night..people walking in groups back up from the end of my road. Huh? Was there a party that got busted? What is everyone doing??? I went back to bed and layed there, wondering what was going on, but not going out to see. Pretty soon a police car with magaphone came cruising slowly by the houses saying "Be prepared to evacuate. There's a fire in the sloughs. (pronounced slews). Gather your pets and be ready to leave in one vehicle at any minute." My heart pounded a bit. Then that is when I went outside and saw the huge flames. We woke the boys, but left the girl asleep.
Should I take my children in the car? They only said "your pets". Should I start figuring out what to save in my house? Family videos..yes! Photo albums..yes! Money stashed away in underwear drawer...yes! What else? If this had actually ended up with our neighborhood at the local HS gym, what would we have brought with us?? Makes me think I need to get my house more organized in cases of emergency.
Anyways, all is well. I think the fire is still going. But not seen from our street's view. There's a ton of stinky smoke in the air. I know they had to evacuate an RV park near where it started. But I'm grateful no structures have burned. I'm grateful for lots of things. And I'm glad we didn't have to evacuate because I hate packing so late at night.

Holy Moly! what excitment! I am grateful you thought about bringing your kids with you....those silly policemen!
I can't believe you took that picture of the farm that very day. I still can't believe how close it was, evac or no! Did I tell you the fire has filled our canyons (60 miles away by road) with smoke?? It's crazy. I'm so glad all is well. (And you know if you got sick of the high school, you could always come stay with us)
Love your photos!
